Emily Sun debut concerto album 'Film Fantasia'

Charismatic virtuoso Emily Sun presents her debut concerto album ‘Film Fantasia’, released on 4 October. Featured on the album is the world premiere of Elena Kats-Chernin’s new violin concerto ‘Fantasie im Wintergarten’ which Emily will give the UK Premiere of with BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Gemma New on 24 October.
‘Film Fantasia’ celebrates the violin as star of the silver screen and a reconjuring of the creative arts post 1920’s. The album centres around the world premiere of ‘Fantasie im Wintergarten’, written by Elena Kats-Chernin AO for Emily Sun and Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, where she premiered it last year as the ASO’s Artist in Association (2023-2024). ‘Fantasie im Wintergarten’ was inspired by the 1925 German silent film ‘Varieté’. ‘Film Fantasia’ also includes John Williams’ ‘Theme from Schindler’s List’ alongside Korngold’s famed Violin Concerto made famous through Australian actor Errol Flynn’s films, ‘Another Dawn’ and ‘The Prince and the Pauper’. ‘Theme from Schindler’s List’ will be the first single from the album, out on 13 September. The album features three of Australia’s finest orchestras - Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra & Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. A lovely connection is that the Korngold was recorded in Hobart, Tasmania, where Errol Flynn was born.
At its world premiere performance, Emily’s rendering of ‘Fantasie im Wintergarten’ received 5 star reviews. Limelight wrote “a magnificent addition to her oeuvre and to violin literature and Sun’s performance … magical” and “an engrossing experience. It has a strongly theatrical flavour” and ArtsHub surmised “As always, Emily Sun gave a shining performance”
Emily will give the UK premiere of Kats-Chernin’s ‘Fantasie im Wintergarten’ with BBC National Orchestra of Wales, conducted by Gemma New on 24 October 2024. Ticket information can be found here.
Emily’s recent performances have included the Barber Violin Concerto with Adelaide Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andrew Litton and debuts at Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra and KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Ewa Strusinska.
